Cultural Fusion: The Dynamic Interplay Between Anime and Cultural Heritage
A Study and a short documentary film demonstrate how anime content and creation methodology influence and are influenced by cultures.
On this page, we will delve into the conceptualization and creation process of the documentary artefact. To access the research study on the topic itself, you can click here: “A STUDY ON ANIME & CULTURE.“
My primary objective of this digital artefact was to analyse the influence of digital culture on identity and cultural heritage. As a result, I initiated a brainstorming session with the team by posing the question, ‘Which communication channel do you believe holds the greatest influence over cultural heritage and people’s identity?’

Artefact Concept
Each one of the team started to dig deep into the animation’s impact on the culture from her perspective and personal experience. I started by studying the links between culture and animation and how they influence many cultures.
Culture is meant to be conserved in a manner that upholds its origins. The realm of anime, as a form of media, has successfully transcended cultural boundaries and left a significant mark on audiences worldwide. The evolution of global media content and its influence on society’s culture has sparked numerous debates. This project aims to enhance awareness about animation’s impact on cultural heritage, highlighting how both; the content and the approach to creating and presenting animation leave enduring impressions on the audience.
Artefact Design
Upon identifying the project statement and concept, the communication channel options were narrowed down from five to a choice between a short video or a webpage. In considering the essential elements for eliciting emotional engagement from viewers, two key factors were pinpointed:
- The type of content (scenes from movies)
- The contextual depth of the storyline (animation movies’ influence on culture)
Upon deliberation, it was agreed that the chosen communication channel should leverage the potency of a visual narrative. Consequently, a documentary-style approach was a stronger preference than a webpage format.
Subsequently, I carried out a comparative exercise to validate this final selection.
implementation
I found that the implementation planning went smoothly and had a positive impact on effectively conveying the intended message. Adhering to the divergent-convergent model helped focus the execution on a manageable scope, specifically addressing three of the initial six factors:
- Metaphor and Symbolism
- Feminism and Gender Role Deconstruction
- Character Building
