INNOVATION MANAGEMENT

CREATIVE MANAGEMENT AT PIXAR

Pixar Creations

Whether we realise it or not, Pixar is now well-known throughout the world. If not Pixar, then one of its imprints, such as Nemo, Inside Out, Toy Story, etc. Pixar’s creations are the buzz of the town, from the Academy Awards jury to industry gurus to our couches at home.
انا حطاك في دماغي وبراقبك وهراقبك’’‘’ a mainstream Arabic dubbing in Egyptian accent, from Monsters Inc.
As a designer, I will not call myself creative here, I have always wondered; how could an innovator or designer create such a timeless impact through his work.

Pixar through the eyes of Ed Catmull

In fact, I have a lot of sayings in my reflections or thoughts on this case study that I will try to summarise now. Studying Pixar innovations through the eyes of Ed Catmull, President and CTO of Pixar and president of Disney Animation Studios, was an affirmation of many hypotheses or doubts that I had about innovation management, an answer to many questions, a debate or conversation arouse, and, last but not least, a mind-opener and source of inspiration for me. I guess now I am considering opening a design studio shortly.

Innovation -Other Components-

It is very nimble to approach the innovation component from a much broader perspective. Some of those other factors, which I earlier experienced as a designer, were in a passive manner. However, no one can deny how the other components influence the Innovation and creative process and make things work in the end.

Sustainable Creative organization

Through this paper, Catmull emphasizes effective collaborative working. He mentioned ‘’In filmmaking and many other kinds of complex product development, creativity involves a large number of people from different disciplines working effectively together to solve a great many problems’’. I strongly agree with Catmull in the aforementioned statement. I really admire how he respects the environment when developing a sustainable creative organisation. It is due to the environment:

  • where lasting relationships matter
  • where it is safe, to tell the truth
  • where the management’s job is not to prevent risk but to have the capacity to recover when failures occur
  • where own assumptions are challenged
  • where there is a continuous search for the flaw that could destroy the company culture

Managing the Creative Organization

Main Principles

Catmull suggests these principles for managing the creative organization as follows:
